Most new power engineers will start with learning arc flash studies where they will master the fundamentals of short circuit analysis, equipment analysis, coordination, and arc flash energy calculations. Once mastery of these fundamentals is developed, an engineer will begin to learn other systems like relay setting & programming, load flow studies, harmonic studies, power quality, protection and control design, distribution design, and substation design. Lastly, for those more adventurous engineers, we can also train them in field engineering work where we test and maintain electric equipment such as breakers, transformers, and relays.
